NC toddler’s mom shot twice, AMBER Alert sparked after dad flees scene with daughter

YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – A man is in custody and facing attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting the mother of his daughter and fleeing the scene of the crime with the child, which sparked an AMBER Alert, Youngsville Police said.

Devon Anthony Whaley, 24, is facing charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit murder, and fleeing the scene of a crime. Youngsville Police said more charges are pending.
Whaley is accused of kicking down the door and shooting Desiree Jaquetta Hopkins twice inside her apartment in the 100 block of Hampton Lane at approximately 7 p.m. Friday. He then fled the scene with his 1-year-old daughter, Desaree Hopkins.
