NC man charged with sexual assault after woman tips off deputy
RAEFORD, N.C. (WNCN) – A Hope Mills man faces sexual assault charges after a woman claimed he displayed a handgun and sexually assaulted her.
Charles Lamont Cottingham, 32, of Hope Mills was arrested Saturday when Hoke County deputies inspected what they thought was a suspicious vehicle at a locked and gated driveway around the 3700 block of Phillipi Church Road.
A female passenger, without speaking, indicated something was wrong. At that point the officer separated Cottingham and the woman and she told the deputy that Cottingham had a handgun in the car.
The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office said the woman had agreed to be picked up by Cottingham in Fayetteville, but then he drove to Hoke County and sexually assaulted her.
Cottingham is charged with first-degree forcible rape and second-degree kidnapping.
