NC Highway Patrol: Speeding motorcyclist hits police car, dies

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WFMY) – Troopers were trying to stop a motorcyclist accused of speeding on Interstate 40 Business west near Stratford Road when he allegedly kept driving.
Trooper J.M. Byrd followed Alex Gibbs into the city limits when Gibbs lost control and went left of center on Peace Haven Road. Troopers told WFMY News 2 Gibbs eventually went left of center and hit an unmarked Winston-Salem vehicle.
Cpl. William Cumbo, a 14-year veteran, was in the vehicle and went to the hospital for minor injuries.
Gibbs was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he later died.
Troopers believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
