Flames engulf one floor of Durham apartment building, 4 hospitalized

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Four people were transported to the hospital after a fire engulfed the fifth floor of an apartment building in Durham, fire officials said.
The four residents were transported due to smoke inhalation. One of those patients also had first-degree burns on his hands and wrists. One firefighter was evaluated and treated on scene for dehydration, according to fire officials.
The call came in at 11:19 p.m. Sunday at the JFK Towers located at 4900 N. Roxboro Road. JFK Towers is a Section 8 community for adults who are at least 62 years old and/or disabled.
When fire fighters arrived on scene, an evacuation was underway and residents pointed out flames blowing out the window on the side of the building. The fire was brought under control in less than 20 minutes after crews arrived, a fire official said.
