Durham County Library Gears Up for Summer Reading 2016

DURHAM – Durham County Library will celebrate the start of Summer Reading 2016 with the Kickoff on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Northgate Mall, 1058 W. Club Blvd. This fun-filled celebration is free and open to the public and will include everything from live performances on the Center Stage to face painting and bounce houses.
All Durham County Library locations will be closed until 2 p.m. that Saturday, June 11 in order for library staff to make sure the Summer Reading Kickoff is a success.
People of all ages are invited to attend. Performers on the Center Stage will include: Caleb Sigmon: Illusionist & Storyteller (10 – 10:45 a.m.); African American Dance Ensemble (11 – 11:45 a.m.); and Melvil Dewey: Library Hip Hop Superstar (12 noon – 12:45 p.m.). Other activities will include Bouncing Bulldogs, game trucks, balloons, Zumba and line dancing, Cirque de Vol: Circus Acts, Danza de los Viejitos and so much more. The Summer Reading Kickoff is just the beginning! Summer Reading runs from June 11 through August 6. Children, teens and adults can register online at durhamcountylibrary.org/summerreading or at any Durham County Library location. Once registered, participants can start earning and logging points starting Saturday, June 11.
Earn points by reading, attending programs, and completing other activities like writing book reviews. Each minute read is worth one point. Participants qualify for different prizes every hundred points earned up to 1000 points. 600 points earns children and teens a free book and entry into the grand prize drawing. Only children and teens receive a free book, but adults can still be entered into the grand prize drawing. Prizes along the way range from bookmarks to tote bags and t-shirts. Grand prizes include: a pirate ship cardboard playhouse for children up to age 5; Star Wars LEGO set and Skyzone gift certificate or cubelets for children between ages 6 and 11; Kindle Fire with Amazon gift card for teens; and Fitbit or Kindle Paperwhite with Amazon gift card for adults.
Participants of all ages are also eligible to participate in the Great Summer Fine Read Down. Visit your local library to learn how you can reduce any outstanding fines or fees on your library card by participating in Summer Reading.
Summer Reading means Durham County Library’s calendar is full of events you won’t want to miss. Check out the schedule online and at your local library to make plans now to attend programs. Some programs do require pre-registration and can fill up.

Other exciting programs planned for this summer include: family musician and teaching artist, Alina Celeste, who combines folk songs and original tunes for a memorable family sing-along experience; the Spin-Man, who can spin basketballs on umbrellas; Farmer Minor, who will bring the famous pig, Daisy, for children to meet; and so much more. Storytimes for babies, toddlers and children will also be available through the summer months. Programs for teens include everything from Mad Science to Teen Fitness and Zombie Zone.
This year’s Summer Reading Midpoint Rally will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 at Durham Central Park. Dress up your dog as your favorite athlete and join in the second annual Midpoint Dog Parade beginning at 4:15 p.m. Other highlights will include storytelling and yoga by Casey Nees, interactive song and dance by Impromptu Players, hopscotch, hula hoops, and food and dessert trucks!
The Summer Reading Finale will be held at the Durham County Stadium from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 6. Activities will include a 1.5 mile fun run, a 400M dash for kids, jazzercise, tae kwon do, boxing, games and more! Everyone is invited to celebrate their Summer Reading accomplishments and get energized for the year ahead.
