Bear sighted near NC high school

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WXII) – Carver High School was locked down Friday following a bear sighting in a nearby neighborhood.

Winston-Salem police said they received a sighting report around 11:30 a.m. in the area of Carver School Road and New Walkertown Road.

The precautionary school lockdown was lifted around 1 p.m., and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools officials said they don’t believe anyone at the school saw the bear.

Officers, however, did find the bear in a wooded area east of Fondly Drive, police said. Officers then lost sight of the bear and weren’t able to find the animal again, police said.
Forsyth County Animal Control officials said they weren’t able to find the bear during their search.
If you see a bear, you’re asked to contact emergency officials, keep a safe distance from the bear and not provoke or otherwise entice the animal.
