911 call from Clinton: ‘Everyone needs to stay inside the building’

CLINTON, N.C. (WNCN) – The 911 calls and radio transmission provide new insight into that fatal police-involved shooting over the weekend.
Officers were called to the Burger King parking lot in Clinton just before midnight Saturday. When they arrived, they found 53-year-old, John Coffey, in a white SUV with a shotgun.
PHOTOS: Police shoot a man in Clinton“There is a subject in the parking lot with a shotgun,” a voice said on the 911 call. “Everyone needs to stay inside the building.”
A dispatcher said, “I need everyone to stay in the building and you need to notify whoever is at the drive-thru they need to get the vehicle away from that area.”
Police said they tried to negotiate with Coffey for 20 minutes and that when he pointed that shotgun at officers they opened fire.
A caller to 911 said, “Shots fired, shots fired.”
And the dispatcher said, “10-4. You are correct, shots are fired.”
